Updates and troubleshooting

Update from the App Store like any app, and if you ever see a full-screen "Update required" there is no way past it on purpose, because that build is known to be broken.

Keeping the app up to date

Updates come from the App Store. If Automatic Downloads for App Updates is on in iOS Settings, you get them without doing anything. Otherwise open the App Store, tap your profile picture and update Keepface from the list.

Your current version and build number are at the bottom of Settings.

The “Update required” screen

Occasionally Keepface needs everyone off a specific build, for example after a bug that breaks chat or a change the old build cannot talk to. When that happens the app shows a full-screen notice with:

  • The reason, written for that particular release
  • YOURS next to REQUIRED, so you can see the gap
  • One button, which opens the App Store

There is no “Later”. The screen exists precisely for the builds where carrying on is worse than stopping.

It is checked when you sign in and again each time the app comes back to the foreground, so raising it does not depend on you restarting. If the check itself fails, because you are offline or the server is unreachable, the app stays fully usable. You are never locked out by a failed check.

Common problems

SymptomWhat to do
Signed out unexpectedlySign in again. Sessions last about 30 days, and signing out on one device ends that device’s session.
Sharing from another app says “Sign in to Keepface”Open Keepface once, sign in, then share again. The share sheet reads the session the app stores.
No notificationsSee Turn on push notifications.
A screen shows “Could not load”Pull down to refresh. It usually means a network blip rather than missing data.
Wrong program on screenUse the switcher in the header. Which programs appear is set in Settings, Programs.
No circles or an empty Circles tabYou are not in a circle yet. Join one in the app before sharing a post to it.
Sign in with Apple or Google failsTry the other method, or email and password. If you originally signed up with Apple, your Keepface email may be an Apple relay address.

Reporting something broken

Include your version and build number from Settings, your iOS version, the screen you were on and what you expected. If the same action works on keepface.com and not in the app, say so, it narrows the problem down immediately.

Frequently asked questions

What is the "Update required" screen?

A hard stop Keepface can raise when a released build turns out to be broken. It shows your version next to the required one and a single button that takes you to the App Store.

Can I dismiss it and carry on?

No, and that is deliberate. It is only ever raised for builds where continuing is the problem. If your phone is offline or the check fails, the app stays usable instead.

Where do I find my version number?

At the bottom of Settings, as a version and a build number. Quote both if you report a problem.

Why was I signed out?

A session lasts about 30 days. After that, or after signing out anywhere, you sign in again. Nothing is lost.

The app looks fine but a screen is empty. What now?

Pull to refresh first. If it still fails, sign out and back in, then check the same screen on keepface.com to see whether the data is missing or only the screen is.
